Iain M. Banks, "Use Of Weapons"
SF set in an extensive galaxy of humanoids, following the adventures of a military-strategist-for-hire working for the all-powerful Culture. Structurally, this reminded me of "I, Robot", since many of the individual chapters would stand alone quite happily as short stories. There's nothing especially fancy here, but the world-building, characters and writing are all solid, and there are appropriate touches of humour, horror and dazzling technical description. Recommended, and I'll look forward to reading more of Banks' work.
