Currently, GNOME and KDE both have their own virtual filesystem libraries. The two systems are largely incompatible, and have different sets of supported filesystems.

It would be useful if there were a standard for VFS plugins so that both environments — and other tools too — could make use of the same virtual filesystems. This may require some careful design for configuration support and features such as shared authentication.
