gtk-config style system for autoconfiguration ("function-config
--cflags --has-function snprintf").
Since gtk-config has since been replaced by pkgconfig, this idea looks somewhat less attractive now than when I first thought of it. A better approach would be to have pkgconfig packages for things like "POSIX" and "GNU printf extensions"; it'd be easy enough to install the .pc files on existing systems.
