An applet for the GNOME panel, consisting of a number (maybe 1) of virtual LEDs which can be made to flash or turn on or off on commands from a simple command-line tool or library (talking over a named pipe, or IPC, or D-BUS, or whatever).
This would let me have a light on the panel that flashed whenever a Gale puff came in, for instance ("Gale Mini Monitor").
