My first idea was that you could build an analogue pitch shifter by building a tape deck that deliberately stretched the tape between the record and play heads -- you'd go through tape rather rapidly, though.
Instead, could you use a magnetic fluid as the recording medium, and pass it through a narrower or wider passage? Or use a magnetic rubberised belt that you could deform between the heads without damaging it...
